Fat Tuesday #4 – Salsa Beargrease Arrives

This week, we welcomed our first shipment of Beargrease completes. This is one of the most anticipated bikes we’ve ever carried.

Introduced at Saddle Drive in August, we first met Beargrease in the mountains of Ogden, Utah, where this bike proved its worth beyond conditions of sand and snow. Our own Scott M. got a chance to flex the bike on demo singletrack; it took off around switchbacks, crushed downhill descents, and was even coaxed to pop a few mean wheelies on a couple of quiet straightaways. Competitive, nimble, and bold, the Beargrease argues that a fat bike can be even more than good, steady fun: It can be a vehicle for emboldened speed, landing confidently on its paws at trail’s end.

Salsa aimed for lightweight, efficient design, which is a little something to ask for a bike built around four inch tires. Beargrease shows its race focus in a stripped-down frame, foregoing eyelets and braze-ons that might otherwise invite fenders and racks. This is a departure from Salsa’s expedition-ready Mukluk, a fat bike introduced in 2010 that’s designed for gear-loaded, multi-day trips. The Beargrease frame and fork is made from ultralight Extrolite EV6 aluminum, an alloy also found in Salsa’s Warbird and suspension 29ers. The finish on the Beargrease trades paint for anodization to save about 100 grams. Other noteworthy features include a stiff, tapered fork that accommodates tires up to 4.8 inches on 100 millimeter rims; an X0/E.13 crank with custom rings to reduce chain/tire rub; custom painted Holy Rolling Darryl rims from Surly, and 120tpi Husker Du tires. Beargrease is quite the looker.

Since its August introduction, we’ve noted that most folks are gunning for the complete. Not surprisingly: the complete bike offers a solid build kit at a price that you would be hard pressed to build custom. More complete specs:

  • SRAM X.7/X.0 drivetrain
  • e*thirteen crankset
  • Avid Elixir 5 hydraulic disc brakes
  • Salsa Pro Moto 2 cockpit
  • Cane Creek 40-Series headset
  • 45NRTH Husker Du 120tpi tires
  • Surly Holy Rolling Darryl rims
  • Salsa Mukluk 2 hubs

The Beargrease comes as a frameset, too. With a 100 millimeter bottom bracket and direct, high-mount front derailleur, it strikes similarities aplenty with the Mukluk; current Mukluk owners might consider a skeletal refresh to their four-season approach.

Limited quantities of Beargrease frames and completes are now available for order; call for updated stock details (734-484-9999). A second ship window is estimated for January/February of this coming year.
