Pugsley is here!

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

The 2011 Surly Pugsley has arrived.  Nothing says winter is approaching quite like this:

What a cool bike.

Surprisingly, once you get it up to speed, the Pugsley handles and accelerates very similarly to a hardtail mountain bike.  It rides confidently on the snow, sand, mud, whatever.  But you can’t really get the full idea of what these things are like without seeing it and riding it around.  If you’re in the local area, come by to our shop to check them out and take it for a spin.  We don’t ship complete Surly bikes, but if you are out of the area and want to do a custom build, let us know.  We’ll outfit your Pugsley frame and Large Marge rims with a killer custom build.

Cyclocross Tires Explained

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Imagine it’s a Friday night in November.  You’re pulling into your driveway from work, clearing out all the garbage from the week, and getting your brain ready to RACE.  Yes, it’s cyclocross season, and it’s time to strap up with those skinny knobby tires and go see how hard you can push yourself before you either pass out or cross the finish line and don’t remember how you got there.  But it’s Friday night and you’re still wrestling with one ever important decision.  In an increasingly panicked internal voice you’re asking yourself: WHICH TIRE DO I USE?  WILL IT RAIN?  IS THERE A SAND PIT?  HELP!  Well, the staff of Tree Fort Bikes comes to the rescue once again with this review of 5 of our choicest cross tires.  Enjoy!

Dirt Road Cycling With Rob Pulicpher
Here in Michigan, the temps are getting lower, the leaves are falling, and before we know it we’re going to start seeing some snow.  Most cyclists are either going to set up the trainer inside, hook up mountain bikes with studded tires, or stop riding altogether until the spring thaw.

Dirt Road WashtenawRob Pulcipher, Author of Dirt Road Washtenaw: Biking the Back Roads, challenges this attitude with his new book, an invaluable resource for local bicyclists. It full is of routes, riding techniques, and histories of the roads most of us have learned to avoid.  There are dozens of routes with detailed maps, photographs, and descriptions illustrating the beauty and varied terrain that the area has to offer.

Though his book is geared towards those in Washtenaw County, his advice and experience is applicable to cyclists throughout the country. I sat down with Rob for a couple minutes last week to discuss riding the dirt roads, and he informed and motivated me to get my knobby bike out on those roads I so often have neglected. (more…)
