Five Things I Learned in 2012

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

It’s been 16 years since I graduated from a kid who rode around on a bike to someone who cycled. In that time I’ve seen a lot and learned a lot. This year was no exception. Here are five things I learned — or learned again — in 2012. (more…)

9 Tips for Photography While You Ride

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Cycling is a great activity to take a camera along on.

Everyone loves photos. They tell a story, let our imaginations run or give us a glimpse into places and things we don’t get to experience for ourselves. Consider this: We love photos so much, Facebook recently spent roughly $1 billion to purchase Instagram. Photos are an incredible way to capture and share the joys of riding.

Below is a list of nine tips that can help you create better photographs on your ride. They are not surefire steps to make your photo to go viral — instead, they’re simple tips to help you achieve consistent results and better enjoy the experience of taking photos. DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that photography is artsy, fun, expressive and enjoyable. There is no right or correct answer. It’s all about personal preference. As such, these tips are generally accepted as a good foundation to core photography knowledge. However, going against tradition can also create successful work, as history has shown. So read up, enjoy and give it a go. (more…)

Saddle Drive 2012

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Saddle Drive 2012 hosted by QBP After the tune-ups and bike sales begin to calm and the heat starts to crank up (was it about a million degrees in July for you, too?), we sit ourselves down and start thinking, start getting in gear for that next and even more awesome season ahead. What’s next for 2013? We headed out to the mountains to find out.

Four of us from Tree Fort spent a weekend at Saddle Drive, a showcase of the newest bikes from Salsa, Foundry, Surly, and beyond, taking sampler rides on short trails in the Wasatch Range of Northern Utah. Organized by our friends at Quality Bike Products, Saddle Drive was — once again — an event that did not disappoint.

Get the scoop, check the videos, and enjoy a taste of the ride yourself:

Surly Bikes 2013 Preview @ Saddle Drive ’12

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Surly, purveyor of the WTF bicycle, has done it again. Since releasing the market’s first complete, ready-to-ride fat bike in 1998, Surly has now taken a step back, introducing a new platform that the brand calls 29+.

tf-img_2034 Meet the Krampus. Carving its own path somewhere between fat bike and mountain bike worlds, the Krampus rolls on 50mm rims called Rabbit Holes, spreading out the 29x3”, tight-tread tires Surly has dubbed Knards. The frame was designed to max out tire clearance on the front and rear while working within mountain bike standards; the Krampus frame has a 73mm bottom bracket and 100/135mm hub spacing. (more…)

Steel Wheels Spokesongs Tour Retrospective

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

The Steel Wheels
Our good friends, The Steel Wheels, recently posted up a video retrospective of their bike tour that we were proud to help support last year. For most of us, riding 600 miles in 11 days is enough. But for these gents, it was only the start, they also played 10 shows in that time span while also carrying all their gear. More than your typical bike touring gear mind you, we’re talking guitars, fiddles and even an upright bass along with all their personal things.

This tour started in nearby Ann Arbor, made it’s way to the west side of Michigan, onto Chicago before finishing up in Indiana. Since the release of their current album, they’ve been making their way up the Americana Airplay chart. They are currently charting in the Top 20!

Check out the video, we particularly like the team work in getting the upright bass trailer up onto the sidewalk.
