Wanderlust Wednesday: Q & A With Arrowhead 135 Finishers Donald Wood and Brian Gillies – Full Interview

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

bags

Last week we had the opportunity to chat with Donald Wood (AKA “Woody”) and Brian Gillies, the only two cyclists from Michigan to finish this year’s Arrowhead 135 ultra-endurance race. They were kind enough to share their experience and offer some insights into the event with us and several other local folks who also came to hang out. In that spirit, we thought we’d keep on sharing and post the full interview on our blog for fatbikers everywhere to read. Give it a read below, even if you don’t have a fatbike; it’s casual, funny, and full of useful wisdom. Be advised that it is a bit on the lengthy side, but well worth it.

I’d also like to use this opportunity to introduce a new blog segment called Wanderlust Wednesday. Alliteration aside, the placement in the middle of the work week is deliberate, since that’s when I often find myself scheming about what I’d like to do over the weekend, as well as daydreaming about where I’d like to go someday. We’ll feature regular adventure-oriented tips on subjects like navigation, cooking, field repair, trip reports, and of course some gear reviews. We also love guest content, so if you have pictures of a dirty bike in a beautiful spot, a tale of a trip gone horribly wrong or wonderfully right, or a suggestion for something you’d like to see, send it our way to processing@treefortbikes.com, and put BLOG in the subject. On a related note, we’ve also set aside some of the store for our new curated selection of bikepacking gear to help you eat and sleep outside comfortably, since nobody wants to have to ride home tired, sore, and hungry. We’re also working on expanding the outdoor section of the website for you mail-order folks.

Past the break is a complete transcript from last Wednesday’s party/talk/Q&A. I’ve tweaked a bit of syntax for ease of reading, but other than that I’ve left it totally intact in order to best convey Woody and Brian’s wisdom. Their opinions don’t necessarily reflect those of Tree Fort Bikes or the Arrowhead 135, although we do greatly value their experience, and we are of the opinion that they are a pair of hardcore, genuine, friendly dudes.

Fat Tuesday #4 – Salsa Beargrease Arrives

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

This week, we welcomed our first shipment of Beargrease completes. This is one of the most anticipated bikes we’ve ever carried.

Introduced at Saddle Drive in August, we first met Beargrease in the mountains of Ogden, Utah, where this bike proved its worth beyond conditions of sand and snow. Our own Scott M. got a chance to flex the bike on demo singletrack; it took off around switchbacks, crushed downhill descents, and was even coaxed to pop a few mean wheelies on a couple of quiet straightaways. Competitive, nimble, and bold, the Beargrease argues that a fat bike can be even more than good, steady fun: It can be a vehicle for emboldened speed, landing confidently on its paws at trail’s end.

Salsa Warbird Ti Review and Test

Meet the 2013 Salsa Warbird Ti

A few weeks ago, we got a chance to visit with Justin and Eric from Salsa Cycles, along with a few samples of their 2013 product lineup. While Salsa’s 2013 specs have been available online for some weeks now, it was great to meet these bikes in person.

The Warbird was no exception. Among the new lineup, the Warbird has been hotly discussed due to its unique, gravel-specific design and geometry. Available in two flavors — aluminum and titanium — each is offered as a frameset or a complete bike. In the couple of months since Salsa’s 2013 product info hit the web, we’ve seen that demand for Warbirds is high — this model will be in very short supply. (more…)

Salsa Cycles – Interbike 2012 (Video)

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Two up and coming segments in cycling are the gravel scene and the travel scene. While many of us have spent our days peacefully riding on gravel roads, more and more events are starting to crop up based around that terrain. These aren’t your standard events. Most are long mile races started in mass, but once you leave the start line, you’re on your own. More often than not, they’re based on an honor system of completing the course.

Also gaining a lot of popularity is exploring the world by bike. Salsa has been supporting adventure riding for some time now but now they support those who travel and need to pack their bike up for flight. Check out the video and see!

Also make sure to check out our other post that includes photos of other bikes.

Saddle Drive 2012

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Saddle Drive 2012 hosted by QBP After the tune-ups and bike sales begin to calm and the heat starts to crank up (was it about a million degrees in July for you, too?), we sit ourselves down and start thinking, start getting in gear for that next and even more awesome season ahead. What’s next for 2013? We headed out to the mountains to find out.

Four of us from Tree Fort spent a weekend at Saddle Drive, a showcase of the newest bikes from Salsa, Foundry, Surly, and beyond, taking sampler rides on short trails in the Wasatch Range of Northern Utah. Organized by our friends at Quality Bike Products, Saddle Drive was — once again — an event that did not disappoint.

Get the scoop, check the videos, and enjoy a taste of the ride yourself:

Salsa Cycles 2013 Preview @ Saddle Drive ’12

Monday, August 6th, 2012

To say that all eyes were on Salsa at Saddle Drive 2013 would be accurate, but it verges on understatement. With a booth that lined up like a midnight blockbuster showing, Saddle Drive participants were hungry to hit the trails and throw around the likes of Beargrease, El Mariachi Ti, and the Colossal — a few of the newest and (let’s be honest) sexiest additions to the Salsa line. Salsa Mukluk Time!

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

2011 Salsa Mukluk Frameset We know that you’ve wanted a Fat Bike for quite some time… Well here’s your perfect chance.

Our good friends at Salsa came to us with a deal that we couldn’t refuse, and now we’re passing the deal on to you. This afternoon we received several pallets filled with shiny new Salsa Mukluk frames ready to be built up.

We are pricing the framesets (fork included) at $449 with Free Shipping*, at that price… we’re sure they won’t last long.

The snow is coming, and for some of us… it’s unavoidable, so a Mukluk is the perfect answer to keep us riding all winter long. Then when winter is over, you’ll have the perfect bike to cruise the beaches, singletrack or touring the desert.
