Studded Tires – A Need To Know

Studded Tires on Ice For most of the country a bothersome season called winter tries to throw a wrench into training or commuting habits developed in warmer seasons past. Next to clothing, tires can be the most important key to winter riding success. Poor tire choice can not only make for an unpleasant riding experience, it can also be outright dangerous.

The most common style of winter tires are studded tires. Studded tires use steel or carbide studs that are molded into the tire casing to provide traction on ice and snow covered paths, trails, and roadways. They can vary in stud count from as few as 40 to as many as 300.

Schwalbe Tires – Interbike 2011

Schwalbe has made major changes to their warehousing structure this year so we should be seeing better inventory availability from them. This is huge news since we saw such a great demand last year and were simply unable to meet all of it due to supply. They are also making some smart and exciting changes to popular models.

One of the big surprises to us was seeing the Racing Ralph pattern relabeled Rapid Rob. Confused? So were we until they explained the logic. The Racing Ralph still exists, but was upgraded heavily with double the number of transition knobs. They’re slightly smaller, but serve to lock up the turns with more confidence. The other change was to do away with the square pitting in the center of the lugs in exchange for a more flexible and grippy horizontal siping. The Racing Ralph also gets the same 127tpi casing as the Rocket Ron. Solid upgrades if you ask us! Don’t worry if you’re a die hard old school Ralpher, Schwalbe is keeping the tread around in the Rapid Rob with basic features and a steel bead. (more…)

Interbike 2010 Day 3 – part 1

Day three in our mad dash through the bike industry and dash did we ever. Today we did speed dating with Shimano, Yakima, CamelBak, Formula, Cane Creek, Twin Six, Formula, e.13, Chub Hubs, TRP, Ortlieb, Garmin, Crank Brothers, Continental, Thule, SRAM, Avid, Rock Shox and Schwalbe. This was by far the most productive day and we want to thank all of these great brands for taking the time to walk us through their latest and greatest gear.

Due to the extreme amount of photos and info collected we are going to break up Day 3 into a few parts so be sure to keep checking back over the next few days for the inside scoop and great photos on the latest gems from the brands we spoke with.

In this part we’ll be focusing on Cane Creek, Schwalbe, CamelBak, Thule and Yakima.
