Wanderlust Wednesday: Q & A With Arrowhead 135 Finishers Donald Wood and Brian Gillies – Full Interview

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

bags

Last week we had the opportunity to chat with Donald Wood (AKA “Woody”) and Brian Gillies, the only two cyclists from Michigan to finish this year’s Arrowhead 135 ultra-endurance race. They were kind enough to share their experience and offer some insights into the event with us and several other local folks who also came to hang out. In that spirit, we thought we’d keep on sharing and post the full interview on our blog for fatbikers everywhere to read. Give it a read below, even if you don’t have a fatbike; it’s casual, funny, and full of useful wisdom. Be advised that it is a bit on the lengthy side, but well worth it.

I’d also like to use this opportunity to introduce a new blog segment called Wanderlust Wednesday. Alliteration aside, the placement in the middle of the work week is deliberate, since that’s when I often find myself scheming about what I’d like to do over the weekend, as well as daydreaming about where I’d like to go someday. We’ll feature regular adventure-oriented tips on subjects like navigation, cooking, field repair, trip reports, and of course some gear reviews. We also love guest content, so if you have pictures of a dirty bike in a beautiful spot, a tale of a trip gone horribly wrong or wonderfully right, or a suggestion for something you’d like to see, send it our way to processing@treefortbikes.com, and put BLOG in the subject. On a related note, we’ve also set aside some of the store for our new curated selection of bikepacking gear to help you eat and sleep outside comfortably, since nobody wants to have to ride home tired, sore, and hungry. We’re also working on expanding the outdoor section of the website for you mail-order folks.

Past the break is a complete transcript from last Wednesday’s party/talk/Q&A. I’ve tweaked a bit of syntax for ease of reading, but other than that I’ve left it totally intact in order to best convey Woody and Brian’s wisdom. Their opinions don’t necessarily reflect those of Tree Fort Bikes or the Arrowhead 135, although we do greatly value their experience, and we are of the opinion that they are a pair of hardcore, genuine, friendly dudes.

Wolf Tooth Components – First Stock, First Impressions

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

Wolf Tooth Components is based in the cycling mecca of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They are hardcore cyclists who race, ride and repeat. Like most mountain bikers, they’re always looking for a competitive advantage over other riders, constantly searching for new improvements to their bikes. The crew at Wolf Tooth comes from design and engineering backgrounds, and they pride themselves on delivering high quality products that are designed and made by local Minnesota manufacturers. It’s their quest for a perfect product and my desire for drivetrain simplification that led us to cross paths.

Gus Hemingway, a Foundry Broadaxe and a New Trail

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Recently we paid a visit to Hillsdale, Michigan to present Gus Hemingway with his brand new Foundry Cycles Broadaxe. Joining us was Foundry sales rep and Michigan native, Jeff Buerman. We were presenting Gus with his new Foundry bike as part of the Foundry Cycles Tradesman program that they launched earlier this year. After a quick photo op and some on camera initial thoughts, we sent Gus out for a quick loop on the Hemingway Trail at Hayden Park otherwise referred to as “H2″ by the local riders. (more…)

The Topeak RideCase iPhone case and mounting bracket is a pretty solid offering from Topeak. The case and mounting bracket can bring a welcomed addition to your daily commute with a few hidden surprises. It makes a nice everyday case that can be slipped onto the bike in the blink of an eye and have you off riding in no time. Of course all that doesn’t come without a bit of a back story of our initial impressions. (more…)

Red Cedar Cyclocross Park

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Cyclocross in Michigan Let’s face it – sometimes, in their crusade to share their love of bicycles with the rest of the world, espousing cyclists tend to exaggerate the ability of bikes to solve all the world’s problems. Fortunately, I often also see examples of cyclists doing things simply for the sake of cycling that positively impact our community in very real ways, ways that serve as a reminder that the über-advocates are in it for all the right reasons.

Take, for example, the recent efforts of one Michael Babcock to give the Lansing cyclocross scene a much needed shot to the heart. Before this season it’d been over a half decade since the capital area had played host to a ‘cross race, and clearly the Lansing cycling community hadn’t been capitalizing (get it?) on the rapid growth in the discipline to promote the sport locally. This year, however, that would change. (more…)

Foundry Cycles Launch Party at The Angry Catfish Bike and Coffee Bar

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Foundry Launch at The Angry Catfish Bike & Coffee Bar Last week we headed over to Minnesota for the official Foundry Cycles Launch Party at The Angry Catfish Bicycle and Coffee Bar. This was the official consumer introduction for the brand. On hand was a selection of the offerings from Foundry for 2012.

Foundry Cycles is a new high end performance carbon brand that is geared towards the rider who is about the ride, and needs the proper tools to succeed. We had a great introduction of the brand at the Saddle Drive event back in July and again in September at Interbike. The event had a great turn out with a lot of interest in the brand. Look for some big news coming a little later this week. (more…)
